Events and Exhibitions

“Pass Forward”, a design exhibition shown at the Hava Gallery in Holon, dealt with associative interpretations of artists in various fields of creation. The opening shot was a video recording handed to fashion designer Naomi Maaravi, who was inspired to create an item of clothing; it was then passed on to illustrator Matan Lieberman, who created a paper mache doll inspired by it, then in turned passed it to fashion photographer Eitan Tal, who created a series of T-shirts, and so forth. By the time we moved, the exhibition had closed, but admit it’s an interesting idea.
Curators: Ehud Raz and Gil Roiter.

The Holon Design Museum continues to invite interesting exhibitions from all over the world. This time, the subject (particularly relevant to this issue) is “Digital Design Sensations - Decode” - in times when we constantly communicate with objects around us expecting them to react, when nearly all our actions are monitored and documented. Focusing on the activity of airplanes in the span of one day in North America - the exhibition enables a unique view into the digital world, which turns almost everything into a stimulating visual object. Closing: End of March, 2012

"Ata - Factory, Fashion and Dream" is currently being shown at the Eretz Israel Museum. This is not only the story of the fabric weaving, but also that of weaving dreams: The dream of Israeli production. The factory was dreamt up by Erich Moller while in Russian captivity during WW1 and subsequently born in Mandatory Palestine. Ata is the only factory in Israel with a town named after it. Prospering during the 60s-70s, it died when people wanted to look like the USA, and the country adopted the capitalist economy.

53 posters taken from three wings of the Israel Museum - archeology, art, and Jewish culture - will from now on accompany the people passing through Ben Gurion Airport, in a poster exhibit decorating its stone walls. Among the posters exhibited are: Yitzhak Danziger’s famous “Nimrod” sculpture; a model of Second Temple Jerusalem; and the Dead Sea Scrolls. The posters carry bilingual explanations.

“Five Minutes”, the opening exhibition at the new wing of Tel Aviv Museum, focuses on the reciprocal relations between the five museum buildings, their connection to the world, and their impact on the history of architecture of the country,

Artist Ehud Oren is exhibiting his recent works at Braverman Gallery. Printed digitally on MDF boards, the works combine graphic design, sculpture and industrial design.

The Mahane Yehuda Market in Jerusalem is becoming an urban art domain. The opening shot - the “Tabula Rasa” project - aims to revive various domains identified with the city. Around 20 artists, with street art orientation, are participating in the project.

Converting Haatzmaut Park in Jerusalem to a culture and art domain - one of the biggest projects in the city - is now underway. Planned by the Shlomo Aharonson office, it will include a large playground, decorative stone paths and lighting, and unique garden furniture. Also to be built there - a “green” café, and a structure to house the gardening and irrigation center of the city, in case any of you are desperately thirsty. 8The work should take around eight months.

Liora Ofer and Gad Zeevi have sponsored an art gallery on the third floor of the Haifa Grand Mall. The first exhibit there has shown works by artist Liat Livni and architect-artist Amir Tomashov. Curator: Shirli Meshulam

Contemporary Gallery is exhibiting a group show, entitled “Kedosha, Kedeisha, Kadisha - Women in Sin and Impurity”, examining religious archetypes expressing the prohibition on women to (God forbid) create, enjoy life, and live at all.

Closed for the period of renovation at the Israel Museum, the Information Center for Israeli Art has reopened nearby the museum library, offering the public comprehensive information accumulated since 1975, also via the Internet. www.imj.org.il/artcenter

Projects

The first stage of the Herzliya beach promenade has been completed, with 800 m. connecting the marina and the Daniel Hotel. With extra accessibility, the promenade will service the public all year round, including space for public events in addition to beach and sport activities.
Architect: Netanel Ben Yitzhak Architects

Students

Student Lior Ben Shitrit of TAU has planned (and built) an ecological garden at an orphanage in Angola. The project was under the auspices of the Israeli Foundation, Arte e Culture active in social progress there, together with the local community. The project aimed at providing the orphanage with a designed activity vegetable garden for self consumption.

Final projects of the Architecture and Interior Design students at Ort College Rehovot focused this year on buildings for needy populations, conservation, and use of natural materials. Reut Binyamini and Ortal Geshuri planned a day-care center at a boarding school for orphans and homeless. Alexandra Tipkin planned a soup kitchen.
