According to forecasts, the Orthodox sector in Israel will
make up 25% of the population within 30 years. However,
one can already point to two contradictory phenomena:
on one hand, the progressive Orthodox community is
opening up to the general population, while isolation in
regular Orthodox cities and neighborhoods is stricter.
Focused on Bnei Brak – the capital of Orthodox society
built as a ghetto - the project proposes bridging the gap
with the secular neighboring city of Givat Shmuel in order
to increase interaction between the two sectors.
Based on roofing Highway 4, which today categorically
separates the cities, the plan aims to use the mutual
in order to bridge differences, via moderating spaces.
This, by tunneling Highway 4 and creating inter-urban
connecting axes, enables the secular sector to enjoy the
urban qualities of Bnei Brak, while providing the modern
Orthodox population with additional living space.
The idea is that increasing the interface between the
various populations on a daily basis, may bring about
greater familiarity, and in turn reinforce the cultural-social
fabric of the State of Israel.
