Southern wing of the
Schlossmuseum (castle
museum), Linz, Austria, 2009
Located near the Danube above the old city
of Linz, the castle was built around 1600,
and expanded to serve as the Emperor’s
residence in the 17th century, when the
city became the temporary capital of the
Habsburg Empire, until 1800 when a big fire
devastated the southern wing.
In 1965 the Upper Austrian National Museum
was housed there, and in 2009 the new
southern wing was rebuilt as the result of a
Europe-wide, open competition.
Bringing the museum worldwide attention,
the modern, glazed structure is meant to
avoid blocking off the view of the city, while
emphasizing the difference between the
historic, heavy building and contemporary,
light approach, free of technological
limitations.
Requiring stable, protected climate
conditions, the 10,000 sqm. exhibition spaces
are located on three underground levels
behind the massive walls of the castle, each
level connected to parallel existing exhibition
spaces. A glass bridge connects the whole
new wing to the old museum.
