Flooranaukio Housing Project
Established in 1874, the Arabia Porcelain Factory is located in the Old City Port – the
site from which the city developed after it was founded in 1550 by Gustav Vasa. The
Housing compound was aligned with the architects' intention to link porcelain art and
architecture, as a gesture to the factory that employed the finest Finnish designers,
later becoming the largest porcelain factory in Europe.
While the patio facade was plastered in white, embedded with the factory's left-over
porcelain pieces, on-site, manufactured red bricks used to clad the street façade in
keeping with the style of the neighborhood.
