MAD אדריכלות: Green Sigma :אדריכל מבצע Osamu Nakamura, Nacasa & Partners צילומים: Tunnel of Light, Echigo-Tsumari, Japan Set in the heart of Japan’s snow country, the restored Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel is part of an ongoing effort to revitalize Echigo-Tsumari, a region defined by mountainous landscapes and satoyama (a Japanese term applied to the border zone or area between mountain foothills and arable flat land) farmland. As younger generations move to cities, the area has struggled with an aging and declining population. MAD’s transformation of the 750 meter-long tunnel introduces a series of permanent installations designed to reawaken the cultural spirit of the region and reconnect people with nature. Approaching the tunnel, visitors encounter a small wooden building that serves as a café and souvenir shop, with a foot spa above. Known as “Periscope” (wood), it features a circular opening that draws in reflections of the surrounding landscape through mirrored lenses. Inside the tunnel, a sequence of spatial experiences inspired by the five elements animates the journey accompanied by the surrounding sound of nature.
