House of the Season

Despite our efforts to moderate the selected houses here, we are frequently criticized for their
luxuriousness, particularly due to the mistaken assumption whereby original thinking necessarily
entails higher building costs.
In fact, correct architectural thinking during the planning stage is likely to save expense,
particularly as it enables a sensible use of available building materials, considerably reducing
maintenance costs in the life of a building, and preventing future expensive repairs of planning
mistakes.
In this light, we have chosen this time to present two houses planned by the same architect: The
first may be designated affordable, and the secondmore complex but still based on conventional
implementation. Both express successful attempts to supply climatic comfort, though the main
difference is that the simple building is made of light, ordinary industrial materials, whereas the
second is massive and made of durable materials.
In the simple house the natural topography is utilized to create a variety of seating places
connected to each of the rooms, the distinction between the public and the private reinforced
by its two levels, while a strip window installed in the gap between the roofs, enables hot air
evacuation in the summer.
Emphasized by different colors, the industrial
materials gain a somewhat romantic image, giving
it the name of “Arizona House”.
In contrast, the massive house, which also serves
as an office, is organized in three box-like cubes,
according to the functional division, while air-flow
and natural light control are maintained by the
location of openings, and the visual connection
between spaces enriches the design of these
spaces, without obstructing their functionality.
