Auditorium del Parco, L'Aquila, Italy 2010 – 2012
Built as a temporary substitute for the Castello Spagnolo
Concert Hall after it was severely damaged in the 2009
earthquake, the Concert Hall in L’Aquila is made of three
colorful, wooden cubes positioned almost randomly.
The seemingly naive design explores formal efficiency via the
narrow gap between aesthetics and the essential.
Carried out by engineering students at L’Aquila University, the
project gave them an opportunity to practice building and, for
Piano, another experimental structure that aroused curiosity.
