The chapel at the Saint
Lawrence cemetery,Vantaa,
Finland 2010
The result of an open competition, the chapel
expresses an elegant empathy for grieving
families inside, while preserving the medieval
stone church and the historical street-bell in
an array of contemporary components, most
prominent of which is a copper mesh wall
that allows views out but ensures privacy for
interior spaces during ceremonies.
Movement in the minimalist structure is
guided by strips of light between the ceiling
and the masonry wall. The path turns at the
altar simulating the transition between life
and death – between earthly pain and the
comforting heavenly world to come.
