A talented architect, Sofer began his fruitful career winning the first competition for the Supreme Court design together with his then partner JosephKolodny. However, after the project was fully planned, the location and concept were changed. After the two were not even invited to participate in the new competition, Dror opened his own office where he designed many buildings, among them the Court House in Ashdod, Protected Housing in Netanya, buildings for the Air Industry and Alta. Dror Sofer was a gifted architect and a generous man. He was 82 when he was killed while doing what he believed in. Architect Amnon Alexandroni, one of the most important leaders of Bare Concrete architecture that developed during the sixties’ and seventies’, has died at the age of 91. Amnon completed his studies at the Technion where he met his future business partner, Avraham Yasky. During their studies, they joined the “Architects’ Group” led by Dov Karmi. After contributing for many years to the development of the firm of Yasky and (his various) Partners, his professional contribution to the office was dwarfed by Yasky’s commercial success and, hurt to the marrow, he retired to his corner in north Tel Aviv. The revived interest in Bare Concrete architecture also revived Amnon’s popularity as an expert on the subject and brought us to his modest office in north Tel Aviv for a personal interview. His office, lacking pretension and electronic aids, had known better days and it was impossible not to be impressed by the fact that his areas of interest went beyond those of an architectural office, as indicated by the black and white sketches alongside architectural sketches hanging on the walls and the hand written pages on his table. Among the prominent projects he designed at the Yasky Alexandroni firm: the Quarter- Kilometer building that served as a hostel for immigrants in Beer Sheva as well as in Nazareth Elite, several villas in Afeka and Ramat Hasharon, apartment buildings in Tel Aviv and the Metals Institute at the Technion, Haifa. Amnon Alexandroni donated his body to science. awards and competitions Meislitz-Kasif-Roitman Architects won the competition for the design of the Academy for the Hebrew Language Building in Kiryat Haleum, Jerusalem. Second place went to Architects Michael Pelled and Daniel Strassburger and Asaf Lerman in collaboration with Daniel Finkelstein and Elvira Turek; third place went to architects Lakstein-Margalit and Ram Kaplan and Nir Ovadia. A student competition has been announced for a conceptual design of the future Bauhaus, including its pedagogical aspects adapted to contemporary reality. Registration: 4/4/21-15/4/21. https://arkitekturo.com events The war on the architectural profession took on a new dimension after Dana Vishkin, elected Chair of the Architects’ Union, resigned together with six members of the national committee, who decided to establish a new representative body. Whether the resignation was right or not, the aim is to take any possible action to cure the ailing profession that has deteriorated in recent years due to a spineless Union that backs down in the face of the Planning Authorities, Planning Administration, the Ministry of the Interior, local authorities, the Israeli Green Building Council, and any other green body that allows itself to take any opportunity to spit in the face of architects and expect them to believe it is raining. The new elected chairman is architect Rami Marash who owns an architectural firm in Be'er Sheva. Although it is time to shake the thresholds of the profession, in a situation where the status of architects depends among other things on the number of members of their representative body, any split may impair our ability to improve the situation. Anyway, good luck, guys. The Tel Aviv Planning and Building Committee has approved a new parking policy that will take effect from July, stating that new buildings will allow only 0.5-0.8 parking for each apartment, probably based on the fatuous belief that in the future, cars will park standing solely on their two back wheels. exhibitions The exhibition “My Warm Home” presented at the Unity Art House, Jaffa, exhibits 10 artists’ interpretations of the subject of “My Home is my Castle”. The painting exhibition by Natalya Dorbowa has already closed… but is nonetheless worthy of a retrospective glance. It throws light on the landscapes of Amsterdam and Utrecht from the veranda of her home in Tel Aviv. Titled “A Ray of Light”, the exhibition cries out that while it is possible to isolate artists, it is impossible to kill their longing to paint. If you ask me, I’d suggest waiting a while until Corona dies down and then exhibit her interesting paintings again. But nobody is asking me… The outdoor exhibition, “Tiny World” by photographer Dr. Ami Scherber, is presented at the Museum Garden, Holon. And this is the story: in a tiny world, designed to inspire, live barely visible, miniature creatures provided by nature with survival tools: from hypnotic beauty, camouflage colors, to huge, multi- faceted eyes. The exhibition reveals the wonderful world of insects, proving that nature is the greatest of all design artists. Closing: 3/4/21.
