Jaffa Hotel,

(

French Hospital) Yefet Street,

Jaffa

The redesign of the compound known as "the

French Hospital" began in the 1990's after the

convent nurses of Saint Joseph de l'Apparition

leased the complex to a private entrepreneur.

Inaugurated in 1879 the complex included a

large building with outstanding architectural

qualities, which served over the years as a

hostel, hospital, Home for the Older sisters of

the Order, and a mental health clinic.

Looking for a way to finance the expensive

conservation of the historic building, the

entrepreneur decided to build an exclusive hotel

with residential units on the site.

The approved construction plan facilitated

the addition of a new 6-storey building,

which allowed economic feasibility for the

implementation of the strict conservation

regulations.

In this framework, an expanded basement floor

was dug under the historic building, adding

a recessive floor and adaptation to the new

function, while the new building located in

the western part of the complex houses the

hotel lobby, additional hotel rooms and some

residential units.

At this stage, British architect John Pawson

joined the planning team, helping to promote

the architectural concept, based on synergistic

relations between old and new, in the spirit

of sustainability. Thus, as opposed to the

ornamental historic building, the appearance of

the new one is restrained, using metal elements

to create a dynamic play of light and shadow.
