the mirror houses
Bolzano, Italy
The Italian architect, Peter Pichler, was introduced to Zaza Hadid who tutored him
for his Master’s degree, during which he worked in the offices of Delugan Meissl,
Vienna and Rem Koolhaas, Rotterdam. After his studies he was in charge of a
project for Hadid in London. This prepared him for opening his own office in Milano
in 2015, in the frame of which he won several prizes and participated in exhibitions.
The “Mirror Houses” presented here are two rental holiday homes designed as
an addition to a renovated house from the 60’s in the south Dolomites region in
northern Italy outside Bolzano, a city well-known for its apple orchards.
The mirror clad façade that separates the house from the rental units, provides
privacy for both sides, while the open facades face the access path overlooking the
landscape. The two units float on a platform above a small basement that serves as
a short-term storage area; bedrooms are flooded with natural
light from a skylight;, and the living area, which includes an
open kitchen, overlooks the scenery via a glass wall that
faces east.

Creating an illusion of a visual continuum that
blends with the surroundings, the sealed wall
between the house and the vacation units
provides privacy to all inhabitants.
