house of the season
mevaseret
zion
Shira Shenton
Situated on a hill in Mevaseret Zion, the old, small building was full of charm, but affected by
the “warts” of time – temporary additions that didn’t contribute to its aesthetic look, particularly
in the residents’ eyes.
The renovation left the original house, while the new extension around and above was designed
in accordance with the topography, like a limb sent out into the open landscape high above
road level, creating below a protected space with parking, a staircase connecting it with the
main level above.
Raked gravel, including a pond, creates a Zen-like garden with Israeli flora and
natural, local stones with a path meandering between them.
Made of insulated stone, glass and timber beams, the new building is ventilated by rising
air currents that penetrate the living room and save the need for air conditioning most of the
year. Emphasized by lighting and color, building details become a central design element,
enabling the use of minimalist furniture that conveys a comfortable simplicity.
The bamboo-covered veranda constitutes a direct continuation of the living space, enjoying
both near and distant scenery.
