Livai Dvorianski Architects are planning
the old Tel Aviv Municipality Engineering
building renovation. Turning the main
square that has served as a parking lot into
the heart of a complex, it will include a café
and shaded waiting areas. The facades will
undergo a face-lift, and colorful gates will
improve orientation.
British architect David Adjaye is designing
an Espionage Museum in Manhattan.
Stretching over roughly 5,500 sqm, the
museum will focus on the banal ideas of
mystery and darkness, via transparent
ceilings, screens, and digital lighting, utterly
missing the cyber point. Well….
This brings us to students who have just
begun the academic year - in architecture
as in other fields - don’t get swept away by
banality.

Awards & Competitions
Elyakim Architects won first place in the
architectural competition for the Military
Campus in Ein Kerem, Jerusalem. Military
colleges are intended to train future IDF
commanders, and from past experience,
state leaders as well. The new campus in
Ein Kerem (what’s wrong with Ramlah?…)
creates a symbolic meeting between the
harsh military framework and the romantic
landscape of the village, through an
organic layout, based on three terraces
accompanying the topography: on the
lowest - the training buildings; on the top
- the support structures; and in the middle
- the main entrance and headquarters
overlooking the pastoral surroundings.
The Russian government has announced
an open, international competition for the
design of four conceptual residential models
suitable for their various regional climates.

Ran Schory, an indefatigable startapitist of
design schools has died. Born and raised
in Tel Aviv, Ran spent much of his time at
the Ha'Ohel Theater, his father one of the
founders. In 1958 he went to Ravenna to
study the art of Mosaics and upon returning,
he studied at the Faculty of Arts, Tel Aviv
University. He later became director of
the Art College (Midrasha), promoting its
accreditation as an academic institution.
Schory was one of the founders of the
Interior Design Department at the College of
Administration and, as President of Bezalel
between 1979-1991 he established the
second accredited school of architecture
in Israel. One of his most significant works
was the editing of a comprehensive book on
the life and work of Architect Dora Gad, in
collaboration with his colleague and friend
Siona Shimshi. An important book, it was
published by Architecture of Israel where it
is still available in a limited edition:

Prof. David Best - one of the most veteran
lecturers at the Technion Faculty of
Architecture and Town Planning has died.
His firm, David Best Architects and Town
Planners was established in 1959 and during
the 80s and 90s his two sons - Zohar and
Ehud joined him. The firm has designed tens
of projects, among them the Sha’ar Hagai
neighborhood in Yokneam, the Golf Hotel in
Caesarea (in collaboration with Adam Eyal),
the Isasbest headquarters in Nahariya, and
a pavilion at Ganei Hata’aruha marking the
State’s 50th anniversary.
The Tel Aviv District Planning Committee
has approved plans for the fourth tower
at the Azrieli Center in the adjacent Yediot
Achronot compound. Anyone who thought
that no forms exist beyond the three basic
ones – square, triangle and circle, is wrong.
Designed by Moshe Tzur Architects the
elliptic tower will soar to a height of 90 floors,
the highest in the country. 112,000 sqm. of
commercial, employment spaces with 240
small apartments of 60-100 sqm. for young
couples; and about 200 protected flats for
the elderly.
District Planner, Architect Naomi Angel
says (in my words) that the design is an
opportunity to connect the autistic center
to its surroundings, with cafes, trees and
cultural buildings on the adjacent streets.
No doubt great for those who can afford to
live there.
And for those who cannot – the local Tel
Aviv Committee is promoting a renewal
plan for the old Central Bus Station in
Neve Sha’anan. Designed by former City
Engineer Danny Kaiser, the plan extends
over 78 dunam in eight compounds between
Menachem Begin Road, Hagdud Ha-ivri
and Hanegev Streets, most of which will be
devoted to housing, commerce and culture,
as well as a food market to feed all the chefs
who star on TV reality food programs. And…
a large square is planned for demonstrating
residents who oppose illegal foreigners, so
they won’t have to take themselves off to
Jerusalem every Saturday.
The United Israeli Architects’ Association
has finally decided to change its dwarfing
name - a crucial condition for improving
public recognition, especially its ability
to determine the architectural education
agenda. All with its new name - The Chamber
of Israeli Architects and Town Planners. It is
a pleasure to note that this has happened
after 15 years of pressure from Architecture
