Designed by Platform 5 Architects, the sculptural prefab structure is in the backyard of a house, northwest of London. Photo courtesy: Alan Williams. Right page: The Zufferey House, Switzerland. The angular design of the prefab structure is meant to reflects the shape of mountain peaks in the background. Nunatak Sàrl Architects (TECNO HOMES). the National Institute for Construction Research by the Innovation Unit of the Ministry of Construction and Housing, was designed to examine whether there is justification for the successful implementation of modular construction in Israel, as a response to the housing crisis. The study proposed to utilize the architectural and engineering knowledge acquired in different places in the world. The main concern was that it was not clear how the Israeli public would treat residential construction of this type: it was proposed to recommend a pilot initiative initiated by the Ministry of Construction and Housing, which would build a small number of residential buildings with a suitable incentive system for entrepreneurs. The study was led by Prof. Rachel Becker, Prof. Yasha (Yaakov) Grobman, and his engineers and architects Gabi Raviv, Yechiel Rosenfeld, Nir Chen, Gabi Trachtenberg, Itai Levitan, Atir Maayan, Michael Tavor. To sum up: Prefabricated construction makes it possible to utilize the extensive professional knowledge accumulated in production plants, and maximize it today through 'industrial design' while adapting relatively easily to the consumers' needs. In this way it may be possible to neutralize (or at least moderate) the destructive effects of over-regulation, lawsuits, and thus reduce the influence of the governing bodies that play parts in the disastrous housing shortage. In a situation where all the buildings in the country look like brothers to the same mother, and where the aspiration of most young people to own their own home remains unanswered, Lorca's poem from 1936, "I want to go home" composed by Hadjidkis, receives new meaning.
