"I’ve been following your respected journal devotedly for the past 30 years and every three months, when the courier delivers it, I ask myself where you draw the energy and resources to produce such a serious and respected magazine…" Moti Ben Horin, who died about two weeks ago, was (almost) one of the last architects to smile when asked, “when are you retiring?” One of the significant sentences I heard from him about twenty years ago when we published the renovated Terminal 1 he designed, was: “When will the article be published? “Why”? we asked. Because I intend to put it on the bookshelf in my toilet" Why particularly in the toilet? Because that’s where the user meets the architect up close!" Moti, who designed some of the most important buildings in Israel, such as Asia House, Jabotinsky House, the Sheraton Hotel in Jerusalem, the Tax Bureau in Tel Aviv and innumerable private homes, had, over and beyond his unique sense of humor, an integral environment and climate-awareness, which he deliberately avoided naming "green architecture" – "most of my buildings are gray.” Thank you, Moti. Remember what we said on your verandah…? Architects never die, they just move to another dwelling. awards & competitions The proposal by Kimmel-Eshkolot Architects in collaboration with Studio de Lange won the competition for the main building and master plan of the Eretz Israel Museum in Ramat Aviv. Announced by the Ramla Municipality in collaboration with the Architects’ Association, the competition for the design of the entrance to Ramla was won by architects Nof Nathansohn and Avinoam Sharon. Dubbed "Ice Junction" due to the ice rink that used to be there, the proposal seeks a meeting place between traditional stone building and contemporary digital building techniques. At the center is a stone and glass cube surrounded by a fountain suggesting the effect of a block of ice. Submission deadline for the Givat Koslovsky competition has been extended to 30/11/20; And the submission deadline for the urban design competition for the Bornstein Complex in Yeruham has been extended to 31/12/20. events The (irritating and unnecessary) regulation requiring construction according to the Green Standard starting March, 2021, has been approved. "Know all" interested parties maintain that implementing the regulation might save 25% of the energy costs. But, this will only further hamper architects who are already forced to struggle with seven thousand two hundred and eight regulations, laws and bureaucratic inventions. Get off our backs, guys! We don’t need another Green Advisor in addition to the twenty-seven we already have. Climate and environmental awareness is a basic condition for proper architecture, for which we have spent at least eight years studying. exhibitions Artist Itzchak Mevorach presented a solo exhibition of sculptures with a social message at the Artists’ House in Tel Aviv - combined industrial materials and prints with touches of color in the spirit of the New American Pop. "The Scent of Art" – a monumental exhibition dealing with the correlation between smell and art is presented at The Farm Gallery, Holon. Israeli and international artists present works in the spirit of the Olfactory Genre that focuses on scent as a foundation for creativity. Closing: end of February 2021.
