Student (engineer) Kai Majed’s project for Wizo Haifa was printed without his name in issue 71. The project - a marine sports center in Bat-Galim, is presented here again. We apologize, Majed.

In the article reviewing the competition for the planning of the Jerusalem Court building (AI 71), there were spelling errors in the names of two architects who participated in the Mann-Shinar proposal - Amit Haas and Amit Weinberg.

Relating to the article about dancing porches published in issue 71, Architect Ehud Kutik writes:

“The dancing porches came into the world to prevent their being closed and added to the main area of the flats. This silly solution bears however no relevancy to the sukkah, as according to the halacha the sukkah must be exposed to the skies. And, the 100sq.m. residential building in Elad - bottom picture on page 5 - was planned by me.”

The winners of the 2007 Project of the Year Competition are:

One of the three winners of the Award for Architects under 45, organized by AR, is the Ecoboulevard in Vallecas by architect Michael Mordiellost of ecosistema urbano. The other winners are FAR Frohn & Rojas (Germany) and Taketo Shimohigoshi/AEE (Japan). And by the way, Mordiellost’s wife has an aunt in Tel-Aviv.

The “Comfyland Experience”, a dynamic domain in Orlando, Philadelphia decorated architect Zvika Tamari with two prestigious awards, granted at the IAAPA exhibition for learning content, November 2007. Chosen out of 1600 works, the womb-like project is intent on improving the child’s motor abilities, concentrating on the sight, smell and touch senses. An Israeli site of the like will be built soon.

The Fund for the Heritage of the Western Wall has won the THEA Award. Considered the Oscar of the museums, the prize was awarded to the Fund for the “Chain of Generations Center” - an underground museum built two years ago in the Wall’s tunnels. The site was designed by Eliav Nachlieli of Programa1, together with glass artist Jeremy Langford, lighting designer Bambi Bueno, director Micha Levinson, and Ron Asulin who directed the video film.

Artist Nachum Tevet won the Life-Time Award of the Ministry of Science, Culture and Sports for plastic arts. The award is granted to influential artists over 55 who have been active for at least 25 years. Nachum Tevet, born in kibbutz Mesilot, now heads the graduate program at Bezalel Tel-Aviv.

Landscape architect office Braudo-Maoz won the annual exhibition “Agro Mashov” Award in the category of gardening.

Verging on architecture

Israeli sculptor, Yehonatan Averbuch, created the sculpture “The Dream” in Odessa, Ukraine . Central to the work is the Genesis scene of Jacob escaping his brother Essau to Haran. Placed on a building stairwell, the sculpture attempts to impart the tempestuous emotions in Jacob’s heart.

After the world’s tallest building, it’s now the turn of the tallest sculpture. “Momentum”, by Israeli artist David Gerstein, is located at the heart of the new international trade center in Singapore. The 18.5 meter sculpture consists of 175 figures, going up and down a spiral incline.

Events

A library of materials and technologies has opened at the Israeli Center of Design - Meditek Holon. First of its kind in Israel, the library provides professional information to architects, engineers, designers, and other professionals. Sounds important.

MIT is suing architect Frank Gehry for negligence in the planning of Stata Center - one of the most famous buildings in Cambridge. The building, built to the tune of 300 million dollars, has developed cracks and water seepage causing mould beneath the amphitheater. To Gehry’s defense it must be said that the building has never been popular, and received heavy criticism for its form when completed in 2004.

Israeli architect Nir Ben-Natan has exhibited a conceptual cathedral at the Vatican. The Deputy Pope, who received Nir, voiced his admiration and offered to promote the cathedral’s building when a place has been found. This is what Isaiah meant by his prophesy - “a light unto nations”.

Students

Shai Gerner, second year student (!!) at Tel-Aviv University, has planned a bridge at Kedumim Circle, Jaffa. Reminiscent of two embracing arms, the esthetic bridge connects an archeological site of a Jewish house with its Arab surroundings. Mind your back, Santiago Calatrava.

The final project of the copywriting track at Betsefer - the school of the Association of Advertisement Companies, dealt this year with the world of magazines. The 80 graduates were requested to select a magazine and advertise it in three ads. In the competition that took place on graduation day, first place went to grad Hadar Stav, whose work involved the Modern Drummer magazine. Hadar, herself a drummer in the GodBelow band, is already taking her first steps in the advertising world.

Students of Tel-Aviv University, the Technion, Bezalel and the Ariel University Center are joining forces with the Bat-Yam municipality to renew the face of the city, through a biennale titled "Hosting".

“The Israeli House”, project of third year student Ma’ayan Aliman of Ariel, critically expresses the nature of the Israeli personality. The project attempts to provide solutions to all the extreme situations characterizing the Israeli family - hosting, holiday atmosphere, aspiring to privacy, or conversely to ultra-exhibitionism - all under the unrelenting control of the “father of the household”.
